ARTIST STATEMENT

Leah/Lee Pomeroy (b. 2003, Michigan, United States) is a painter, illustrator, media artist, and mixed media artist who lives and creates in Warren. They work in these media because it’s what they are most comfortable with and what they feel shows the best of their ability. They are inspired by the visual artist Frida Kahlo because she turns her pain into art, which is what Leah has done in past art and keeps aspiring to do. They are also inspired by anime and kawaii styles because they grew up watching and loving anime, having a huge impact on their art and style.

The main subject of Leah's work is self expression which is important to them because they were never able to really express themselves when they were younger. She would always get judged for being who She was. But now, being unapologetically them has definitely been a result of their art. Their art-making process consists of getting inspired by others' work and songs, or even their own feelings. This is important to understanding their work because a lot of their work has inspiration from tons of artists, which they cannot take credit for. As for her feelings, that is left up to interpret.
